Spiritual Life Project Broadens Activities

Spiritual life at The King’s College is reaching a new level through the Spiritual Life Project’s progress this year, spiritually and numerically. SLP aspires to be a solid foundation for spiritual life at King's.

Emily Collins (’13), a leader of SLP, described the club’s desire to transform King’s with an increase in spiritual growth. “The goal is to go out around campus and spur on spiritual growth,” Collins said.

This year, Collins estimates around 30-50 people come to each meeting, and many new ideas and events are being hatched.

SLP members will be going on a retreat together October 28-29, the location of which is to be determined. During lunch, SLP has reserved Classroom Six for use as a prayer room for all prayer-hungry students. The group also went to the Bowery Mission earlier in the semester, and hopes to make the trip a monthly one.

Ray East, Director of Spiritual Life at King’s, says the inclusion of a team of seven leaders has helped SLP tremendously this year. Having the new members has opened up so many more opportunities for the group, such as the events mentioned above, says East.

This year, Student Fellows have been attending the meetings and will soon begin praying for each of their respective Houses at SLP meetings. Staff and faculty have also been attending and speaking at meetings.

The group has a list of professors and speakers lined up for the semester, one recent speaker of which was Matt Bennett (founder and president of Christian Union).

“Spiritual life seems to be on an uptake. There’s been a slight increase in the number of students attending church, and many more school Bible studies,” East said.

Leader Peter Fleming (’13) said he views working with SLP more a joy than a job due to the excitement of student members. Meetings this year consist of corporate prayer, followed by announcements, teaching or testimonies, then small-group discussion and prayer.

While he sees last year as a start-up, Fleming believes this year is kicking off to a great start, and he is “pumped” about SLP’s future.
