Financial District, NEW YORK—Although TKC Men’s Baseball doesn’t officially start until spring, the team is practicing in the offseason under new captain Jeremiah Gill ('15), with five returners and four new players.

Apart from their weekly practices, the team’s fall scrimmages give them an opportunity to learn how to work as a team and prevent them from getting complacent. The captaincy was passed to Gill from Grant Olson (’14).

Gill has seen the team improve from last year.

“[The team] hit well and was more aggressive on the base but needs to avoid basic fielding errors,” Gill said, citing poor defense and inconsistency during its first scrimmage this year versus NYU.

The final score was a 26-21 loss in seven innings for King’s.

In the game freshman Tyler Rosario (’16) made his first collegiate start pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up numerous walks and hits.

Gill came in to pitch after Rosario. Gill pitched a rough 1 2/3 inning with numerous walks before settling in and cruising through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings.

Right-handed pitcher Olson started the seventh inning, but only completed a third. Peter Flemming (’14) came into the game to finish the last two-thirds of the inning.

Despite the struggling pitching staff giving up over 20 offensive runs, King’s showed promise for the upcoming season and improvement from past season.

Jonathan Lile (’15) went 4-4 with two singles, a double and triple. He was a home run short of hitting for the cycle.

Power-hitting left fielder Gabe Medina went 3-3 with two singles and a home run in his second at-bat in his first collegiate game. Medina’s home run is the second time in King’s history that a freshman has hit a homerun in his first game.

In addition to King’s booming offense, Gill also stole home in the seventh inning.

King’s will try for their first win of the year this Saturday at noon versus NYU at Juniper Valley Park.
