“I would love to help you, hold space for you, and hopefully shine a new light on the light that really is Spirit,” read the first line of April Roane’s email response when I asked for an interview. After a brief email exchange deciding when to chat, we scheduled a call.

Her eyes were big and her smile wide. Many people are skeptical in the presence of a medium, but nothing felt suspect about Roane. She’s a happy, beaming character.

As she reached out to perch her iPhone on top of her laptop, her arm extended toward the camera resembling a hug. Finally, she got the phone to stay still and as she backed away from the camera, her bright pink shirt revealed the phrase “Good Witch” printed across it.

The COVID-19 pandemic has increased demand for psychics and fortune-tellers, who are seeing more clients and making more money than ever before, according to an article published by the New York Post. People are more prone to seek help during times of uncertainty and despair. New York medium, Marion Hedger said they doubled their weekly earnings and saw a 35 percent increase in clients since the pandemic began.

Roane is a medium, though she refers to herself as a “channel.” Her process, as she describes it, is to “hold space for beings of the highest truth.” Some consider her a psychic, but Roane believes that the term is outdated. Her job encompasses more than just looking into the future, and, therefore, Roane doesn’t care much for the labels.

“God will remove labels,” said Roane. “You have guides, you have spirits and you have loved ones… everyone is connected.”

Roane believes that we are all united as one and that our being is both clairvoyant and clairsentient, meaning that we can see and feel beyond our natural senses. Perceiving events or hearing people speak is a sign that we are functioning correctly as human beings, according to Roane, and she refers to the voice as “Spirit.” She also believes that each of us is connected to a natural source–an “ascended master,” as she describes it, that guides and helps us.

Roane, who was raised in a Catholic family, finds her personal source to be Jesus.

“The more spiritual I become, the more beautiful I find the ascended masters. My natural connection was always Jesus.”

Roane was born and raised in Miami, FL. For many years, she worked in the town of Cassadaga, which is known for its masses of psychics and mediums, but she just recently relocated to East Texas. Roane attributes the move as part of God’s plan to bring her business to the Bible Belt of America, a region known for traditional morals and Conservative values.

Don’t be afraid to get personal with your god. If you’re Christian, own it! If you’re Buddhist, own it! If you just want to be an asshole, own it!

“We’re watching a nation fall apart because old ways aren’t always the best ways,” Roane said regarding the current unrest in America. Roane believes that people have lost themselves to the darkness in the world because they aren’t tapping into their spirituality.

“I know when I don’t tap into me, I suffer. Spirituality is giving yourself permission to find your life,” said Roane. “Don’t be afraid to get personal with your god. If you’re Christian, own it! If you’re Buddhist, own it! If you just want to be an asshole, own it!”

Regarding skepticism from the Christian community, Roane thinks it’s fine for people to have their opinions, but she won’t let them get in her way. During her time in Florida, she found a coterie of friends in the First Coast Metropolitan Community Church in St. Augustine.

“Faith says everything will be okay. Hell, it’s a real place. It’s a place that we create in ourselves and some of us choose to live there every day,” said Roane. “We get in toxic places and when people don’t understand what I do, or a church is calling me a false prophet, then that’s not a church I want to go in.”

In December of last year, Roane heard a message from “Spirit” to hold space for archangel Gabriel, a holy figure well known for delivering sacred messages to people on earth from the Heavens. She described the moment of hearing Gabriel as intense.

“I’m just this Polish-Italian white girl,” Roane joked of the experience.

During her interaction with Gabriel, she also had a premonition of 2020.

“Spirit said that 2020 would be a year of blessings. Spirit also said that many would die this year, but people were waking up to the fact that we are alive right now.”

“April,” I said. “Before we go, there’s one question I have to ask you.”

I had to ask her the most universal question everyone wants to know when they meet a psychic: ‘What happens when we die?’

“When we die, we’re more alive than ever!” she exclaimed.

I thanked her for her time.

“Thank you and stay lit within the light,” Roane replied before ending the call.
